Versatility. It’s what sets DirtyWhite apart from other artists. Musically gifted, it seems he can perform any genre well. From rap to rock, pop, and R&B, his music style is varied, passionate, and meaningful. He has no limits. While some rappers only have one skillset up their sleeve, DirtyWhite is a jack-of-all-trades, or perhaps a jack-of-all-genres. His true love is hip-hop, however, the influences and styles in his music are derived from a broad range. He experiments with sounds pulled from gospel, soul, country, jazz, and blues in his art.
His most recent YouTube videos, “Reasons” and “This Feeling,” are perfect examples of the range DirtyWhite has to offer. With heavy rock vibes, the video for “This Feeling” pops! In the song, DirtyWhite samples his own voice in the instrumentals. Directed by IllyRock out of Raleigh, it features simple backdrops utilized as powerful agents of portrayal. It is a high-energy anthem for the ages. His song, “Reasons,” however, sits on the other end of the musical spectrum. Honest and raw, DirtyWhite opens up old wounds in this song about the pain of love lost. The video is beautiful and simple, focused on DirtyWhite singing as he plays the piano.
Based in his hometown of Wilmington, NC, DirtyWhite has been practicing and performing music since he was six years old. He’s had formal training in piano lessons along with several semesters of Music Theory college courses, however, the majority of his talent is self-taught. Music comes easily to DirtyWhite and he plays multiple instruments including the guitar, bass, piano, drums, synth, and organ. He began taking his music seriously about four years ago when he began actively recording and promoting himself as an artist. DirtyWhite always dreamed of pursuing a career in the music industry, but he never realized his actual industry potential until he began to share his music with friends. His music was well-received and, slowly, DirtyWhite began to gain traction locally.
“I thought it was all gas until I started to compare myself with other artists,” DirtyWhite explains. “I realized that I was doing something nobody else was, at least not to my extent, and that was diversification. Very few artists I’ve seen can produce, compose, perform, sample, and do it all by themselves. I take my music very seriously and it shows.”
At first, DirtyWhite was mainly focused on his rap game. It wasn’t until his creative circle discovered his singing voice and he began slowly incorporating it into his original tracks. Fans instantly loved it, and as a result, DirtyWhite released his self-written, self-produced 10-track R&B album titled, “Call Me When You Get This.” The work became an instant classic in his catalog of work.
Musicality is the most important aspect of DirtyWhite’s work. His music is layered with complicated bars and lyrical depth.
“My diction can be varied,” DirtyWhite says. “Sometimes I slur my way through a Southern-style set, or I can open up and go Logic-esque as I murder some complicated cadences.”
His influences come from all across the music spectrum, but regardless of style, DirtyWhite makes it a point to maintain chord changes, implementing musical theory in every part of his work. He is currently working on an album titled, The Proof. DirtyWhite describes it as “heartfelt” and “heavily written” with some key features from artists he’s never worked with before. He’s eager to unveil that along with a new performance-style video which drops in January for his single “Reckless In Romance,” another visual shot by the illustrious Director IllyRock. His single, “Sad Boi Music” will follow quickly with a release date set for the end of February. “Sad Boi Music” features his good friend and co-artist, TVM Killa, and is backed with acoustic guitar and trap drums. Inspired by self-growth, it’s a song about embracing emotional maturity and sticking to the woman he loves. It’s bouncy and melodic, a track which DirtyWhite hopes gives his audience a great vibe. Tons of new music in store, DirtyWhite is expanding vigorously in 2021, hoping to head on tour with performance dates to be announced.
